"Blue Belly" - SOLD

I bought a new color, 'Ivory Black', and really wanted to paint a darker painting to see it in action. I think it is great. I have had teachers and other painters warn me about using black and have avoided it for a long time. Wow, I don't know why I listened. I end up waisting less paint, and can get to the right value much quicker. Hmmmm, I wonder what other colors I am missing out on...?

This is great! Where would John Singer Sargent have been without his black?
You are in good company!

I'm with you, Aaron. I've gotten so tired of trying to mix grays that today I put out Portland Gray and mixed color into it. Beautiful color --- and saves so much time and paint!

I think the forbiddance of black is an "old artist's tale" that too many accept without basis. It has hardened into a kind of silly dogma.

LOVE your paintings! I was turned onto your blog by an artist friend, and I am so glad! The compositions are so original and value conscious. An inspiration for me.

Aaron, i love how the blue bowl just jumps out of this painting. i suppose that's the black doing it's job! like you i've been avoiding black. just yesterday i got frustrated trying to get a dark enough gray. out came the ivory black and i was happy with the result. always something new for me to learn.
